The city of Northville, Michigan, is an idyllic American small town of about 6,000 residents, according to the United States census in 2010, located in both Oakland and Wayne counties, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Detroit.
Majestic Victorian-era architecture lines the streets in the city’s Historic District with shady, green neighborhoods and beautifully maintained houses that first went up in the 1920s or 1930s.
Some of the other, more-modern housing options in Northville include multi-family complexes, condominiums and single-family residences.
Northville’s downtown area is living proof that the walkable, park-like and vibrant city center is not completely dead in America today. A stroll down the sidewalk will show you old-world street lamps, protected historic landmarks, an eclectic blend of theaters along with galleries, restaurants, businesses and specialty shops.
Northville Township, established in 1898, become a Charter Township in 1985. The Township was once a farming community, but has grown to be a vibrant and thriving residential and business community.
A Brief History of Northville
Nestled among serene rolling hills and pastoral countryside, Northville began life as an organized community in 1867, when it officially became an incorporated village. In 1955 it took the next step up the ladder and became a city.
When we take a trip back in time, all the way to 1823, we find out that Gideon Benton received the first-ever land patent for the patch of land that would become Northville. The community did not amount to much more than Benton’s own clan until some time in 1825, when the initial settlers of the area planted their metaphorical roots here.
During its village period, Northville welcomed the arrival of none other than Henry Ford himself. Ford bought a factory in town in about 1919, where valves were produced for every Ford, Mercury and Lincoln (minus the Lincoln Continental) until 1981, when it was sold.
Work, Rest and Play
Northville is within a 30-minute drive of two of the state’s largest metropolitan areas: Ann Arbor and Detroit. This opens up a wealth of opportunities for those looking for a job. The city itself offers some fairly large employers, such as the Northville Public Schools, Northville Downs, and Shopping Center Market.
Close proximity to the aforementioned cities also comes in handy when you want to have that urban, “night-on-the-town” experience – see some live music, go dancing, peruse some art galleries, book stores and large museums. But Northville’s residents can enjoy these activities even without leaving town.
Northville offers one-stop shopping and dining at Northville Square shopping center. Or, you can treat your taste buds at Genitti’s Hole-in-the-Wall Italian Restaurant, Table 5, Rebecca’s Family Restaurant, Tirami Su or Koji Japanese Restaurant.
For art lovers, the Dancing Eye Gallery is a great stop; for home and bath accent items, the Starring Gallery attracts many people. The State of Mind Art Gallery is another popular local stop for gifts and jewelry.
Northville and Northville Township share a Parks and Recreation Department through which a vast variety of facilities and activities are available. Some of these include:
Northville’s residents like to keep busy all year long. They take advantage of their relatively small size and quaint Victorian setting by putting together a variety of events and activities, come rain, snow or shine.
Art in the Sun happens every June, a farmers’ market comes to town during the Mat-to-October months, Fire and Ice in January provide something to look forward to after the holidays, and much more.
